The LAV is
based upon the MOWAG Piranha I 8x8 APC design. Originally, the US
Army (vehicles to be designated M1047) and US Marine Corps were both
slated to receive the LAV 25, but the Army order was cancelled and the
USMC received them instead. Other US variants of the are the LAV-AD (Air Defense). LAV-AT (Anti-Tank), LAV-C2 (Command and Control), LAV-L (Logistics), LAV-M (81mm Mortar Carrier), LAV-MEWSS (Mobile Electronic Warfare Support System), LAV-NBCR (Nuclear,Biological,Chemical Recon), and LAV-R (Recovery). Similar non-US LAV variants are the Australian ASLAV-25, Canadian Coyote, Coyote Bison APC, and Saudi Arabian National Guard LAV-M. |
